How to Schedule Dog Walks (Without the Weekly Headache)
If you run a dog walking business with more than a handful of dogs, the weekly schedule is probably the single biggest time sink you have. Rebuilding the rota from scratch every week, working out the run order, then telling everyone what changed -- it adds up to hours you could spend walking dogs or winning clients. Here is how to make scheduling a five-minute job.
Start with recurring walks, not a blank week
Most of your walks repeat: the same dogs, the same days, often the same slots. If you are recreating that pattern by hand every week, you are doing avoidable work. Set recurring walks once and let them populate the week automatically, then spend your time only on the exceptions -- the one-offs, the holidays, the new dogs.
Separate the slot from the route
A common mistake is to schedule by time alone. A 9am pickup on one side of town and a 9:15 on the other is impossible, however neat it looks on a calendar. Schedule the booking, but plan the round by geography: group dogs by area, sequence the stops by postcode, and let drive times tell you what actually fits. Software that understands rounds will do this for you; a calendar never will.
Make the run sheet live
Printed run sheets are out of date the moment a booking changes. Give each walker a live view on their phone so the order, the addresses and the per-dog notes are always current. When you move a walk, the walker sees it -- no follow-up text required.
Plan for cover before you need it
The week always throws something at you: illness, a van off the road, a last-minute holiday booking. A schedule that shows who is doing what, with room to reassign dogs quickly, turns a crisis into a two-minute edit. A paper or spreadsheet rota turns the same event into an evening of re-planning.
The five-minute week
Put those together -- recurring walks, geographic routing, live run sheets and easy cover -- and the weekly schedule stops being a chore. You review the exceptions, confirm the rounds, and you are done. That is the workflow PawDash is built around.
